Note: Khūzestān province is located in southwestern Îrān and shares a border with Iraq. In 6000 BCE, people from the Zargos Mountains settled in the region, which eventually became the center of the Elamite kingdom, the capital being Susa. The Elamite kingdom was periodically invaded by the Assyrians, the Babylonians, and the Sumerians among others, until Ashurbanipal destroyed the kingdom and capital (646-639 BCE). Khūzestān became part of the Seleucid, Parthian, and Sasanian empires, and was controlled by the Arabs from 642. In the 20th century, the region was revitalized with the advent of oil and natural gas production.
