The capital, Bandar ʻAbbās, was founded by Abbās I, the first king of the Safavid dynasty (1501-1732). In 1793, Hormozgān was ruled by Sulṭān of Muscat of Oman; his rule over the area continued until 1868. Later, the region was under the control of the South Persia Rifles, which was organized by Major Percy Sykes as a move against the Russians during Russian-British rivalry in World War I.
