Note: A Roman Imperial province of northern France by 14 CE, under the emperor Augustus; it had been conquered earlier by Julius Caesar during the Gallic Wars (58-50 BCE). It roughly encompassed the regions of Brittany, Normandy and the area around Lutetia Parisiorum (Paris) in what is now the modern country of France. Its capital was Lugdunum (modern Lyon). It included most of the region that the Greeks called Celtica (Celtica south of the Loire was detached and combined with other districts to form the province of Aquitania, or Aquitaine).
