Note: This was a federally-recognized "rancheria" stewarded by the Wiyot Tribe. The former rancheria is approximately 20 acres. The Wiyot and their ancestors have lived in northern California for centuries, however, after contact with Europeans, the tribe's population declined substantially from disease, slavery, and displacement. Most devastating was a series of massacres in 1860 led by landowners and businessmen, who murdered up to 200 members of the tribe. In 1908, the rancheria was established. By 1961, the rancheria system was abandoned, yet it wasn't until the early 1990s that a new, 88-acre reservation was established for the Wiyot Tribe, located nearby. The rancheria, referred to by the Wiyot as the "Old Reservation," is under private, individual ownership, but still under Wiyot Tribe jurisdiction. |
