Note: This is a federally-recognized reservation stewarded by the Bitterroot Salish, Upper Pend d'Oreille, and Kootenai peoples comprising the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes. The reservation spans over 1,200,000 acres in Lake, Missoula, Flathead, and Sanders Counties, Montana; approximately 581,906 acres of the reservation are tribally owned. The reservation was first established in accordance with the 1855 Hellgate Treaty, but original tribal land ownership was drastically reduced during land allotment beginning in 1904. |
