Note: This is a federally-recognized reservation stewarded by the Onondaga Nation. The reservation is located just south of the city of Syracuse in Onondaga County, New York. Though the Onondaga Nation occupied lands in present-day New York since time immemorial, they did not receive federal reservation lands until 1788. At this time, the Treaty of Fort Schuyler allocated over 7,000 acres of land on the Nation's ancestral territories for a reservation. Though subsequent land transactions have decreased the reservation's land base, the Nation continues to reside on the remaining land base within their ancestral territory. In an effort to uplift the epistemic authority of Indigenous knowledge systems and engage with Indigenous peoples' Right of Reply, ethical collaboration with the tribal chairperson's office and/or cultural center is highly encouraged for the most authoritative information about tribal reservations. |
