Note: This is a federally-recognized reservation stewarded by the Lower Sioux Indian Community, part of the Mdewakanton Band of Dakota. The reservation spans 1,743 acres of land in Redwood and Renville Counties, Minnesota. Though the Dakota peoples occupied the Minnesota River Valley prior to European contact in 1862, the Lower Sioux Indian Community was not granted a federally-recognized reservation until June 29, 1888. The Indian Reorganization Act of 1934 allocated more land to the tribe, bringing the reservation to its current acreage. |
