Note: This is a federally-recognized reservation stewarded by the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, one of six Ojibwe members of the larger Minnesota Chippewa Tribe. The reservation spans approximately 47,000 acres, the majority of which are tribally owned, in Cook County, Minnesota. It is bordered by Canada to the north, Lake Superior to the south and east, and the Grand Portage State Forest to the west, encompassing a historic fur trade site on the Northwood's Lake Superior shoreline. While the Grand Portage Band traditionally inhabited a vast area throughout present-day Ontario and Minnesota, it did not receive a federally recognized reservation until 1854. At that time, the Band ceded their lands in the Arrowhead region of Minnesota in exchange for the establishment of their current reservation. |
