Note: This is a federally-recognized reservation stewarded by the Morongo Band of Mission Indians. The reservation spans more than 34,000 acres overlooking the Banning Pass in Riverside County, California; specifically, it stretches from the San Bernardino Mountains to the north, through the Banning Pass, and to the foothills of the San Jacinto Mountains to the south. The Wanakik Cahuiillas and Serrano Indians, from whom the Morongo Band of Mission Indians descend, practiced their agricultural skills on lands near the present-day reservation following their baptism at Mission San Gabriel in 1809. However, the Morongo Band did not receive a federal reservation until 1877, when an Executive Order set aside land for a future reservation. The establishment of the reservation was further solidified by an Exective Order in 1881, and the reservation lands were brought into federal trust via a trust patent dated December 14, 1908.
