Note: This is a federally-recognized reservation stewarded by the Hoopa Valley Tribe. The reservation spans 85,446 acres (144 square miles) in northeast Humboldt County, California, over three-quarters of which are designated as commercial timberland. It is divided into seven districts (Campbell, Hostler-Matilton, Agency, Soctish-Chenone, Mesket, Norton, and Bald Hill), which correspond with traditional Hoopa villages. The ancient Hoopa village of Takimildin, described as "the center of the world" for Hoopa peoples, is also located in the heart of the reservation. The reservation boundaries were initially established by an Executive Order on June 23, 1876. Its boundaries were further expanded through an Executive Order in 1891 and solidified on October 31, 1988 when President Ronald Reagan signed the Hoopa/Yurok Act. |
