The reservation spans over 16,500 acres of land atop the Laguna Mountains, near the town of Campo in southeastern San Diego County, California. It was first established as a 710 acre reservation on February 10, 1893 following an Executive Order dated January 12, 1891. As the reservation lands expanded to its current acreage through Executive Orders dated February 2, 1907 and December 14, 1911, the original 710 acre reservation became known as Old Campo and the expanded lands became known as New Campo or Muht Hei.
