Note: Located in the isolated Himalayan kingdom of Mustang, once a center of Tibetan culture and now part of north-central Nepal. Noted for nearby series of caves in steep cliffs, forming a rock-hewn monestary complex containing paintings and manuscripts dating to the 15th century and earlier, primarily associated with Bon, an animist faith that flourished in the region before the arrival of Buddhism in the mid-7th century CE; adherents of the religion still resided in the area. |
