Note: Headquarters for Banra sect of Newār group; is a trade center for barley, wheat, rice, millet, vegetables & fruit; has several Buddhist temples, vihāras & a palace. According to Nepalese chronicles, Lalitpur was founded by King Varadeva in 299 ce. Some scholars believe that it was the capital of the Licchavi, Thakuri, and Malla dynasties; that theory, however, is now disputed. When Prithvi Narayan Shah conquered the valley in 1769, Patan/Lalitpur was plundered. |
