Note: Semnān is situated in the southern foothills of the Elburz Mountains. In 1036, the city was destroyed by the Turks, and later by the Mongols in 1221. Notable antiquties include a minaret for the congregational mosque (1030-1034), a medieval fortress, and a mosque built by Qajar ruler Fath 'Ali Shah (1827-8). Currently the city is a strong market for grains and tobacco. |
