Note: Much of the territory of modern Benin was an important native kingdom, Dahomey, at its height during the 17th-19th centuries. It was conquered by the French, who deposed its ruler and conquered Abomey in 1892. Later, the region was part of French West Africa from 1895. The official language is French, though local languages are also spoken, including Fon, Yoruba, Adja, Bariba, Somba and Aizo. |
