Note: Kingdom in the Chao Praya River basin, near Bangkok. Emerged from the fringes of the Khmer empire to dominate much of present-day Thailand. Theravada Buddhism flourished under the Ayutthaya, with the sangha playing an important role in society. Fell to the Burmese by the late 18th century.
