Note: An important ancient Maya commercial center and port city on the Pasiōn River, in a remote area of the Petén rainforest region of Guatemala. Excavations here have uncovered the largest palace of the ancient Maya world found to date, including a royal ball court. The palace was constructed primarily in 770 CE, during the reign of Taj Chan Ahk; it included around 200 rooms and sprawled over nearly a quarter-million square feet. Has hieroglyphic inscriptions.
