Note: This is a federally-recognized reservation stewarded by the Yavapai-Apache Nation, which is comprised of members of two culturally distinct tribes: the Yavapai, who refer to themselves as Wipuhk’a’bah, and the Apache, who refer to themselves as Dil’zhe’e. The ancestors of both tribes had lived in the area surrounding what is now the Upper Verde valley of central Arizona, for centuries. After wars with the U.S. government in the late 19th century, a reservation was created for both groups, then rescinded, and members of both tribes were forcibly removed to the Phoenix area. When the reservation system began to break down, surviving members moved back to their home country. Today, the present-day reservation is comprised of five non-contiguous communities totalling about 600 acres in size: Camp Verde, Tunlii, Middle Verde, Rimrock, and Clarkdale. |
