Note: Pleven is a large town in northern Bulgaria located in fertile agricultural land just east of the Vit River. The area is also known for its rich oil fields. First settled by Thracians under the name of Storgosia, it was destroyed by the Huns. The Roman emperor Justinian I rebuilt it in the 6th century. Hungarians took it over in 1266 and gave it its current name. As an important fortified town under the Ottoman Empire, it became an important trade center from the 15th to the 19th century. In 1877-1878 it was the site of a great battle, the Siege of Pleven, of the war between the Ottoman Empire and Russia and its allies. The town now provides the surrounding agricultural area with essential goods and services, and hosts food processing, woodworking, cement, tobacco, engineering, textile, and rubber industries. The town has many monuments and no less than eight museums commemorating the Siege of Pleven and the defeat of the Turks. The 2003 estimated population was 311,400.
