Pliska (inhabited place) |
Note: Pliska, a village in northeast Bulgaria, was once the capital city of the first Bulgarian kingdom, from 681 to 893 CE, founded by Asparuh Khan. It was a large city covering some nine square miles, protected by strong ramparts, a moat, and by fortresses on the surrounding hills. There was a heavily fortified inner city with walls and towers, and within that the fortified Big Palace of the Bulgarian khan. Today, the medieval fortified city is a ruin, and the modern village sits about one and one-half miles south. |
