Note: It began as a Roman settlement, and was the capital of the Arverni tribe, the original holders of the Auvergne region. Clermont was an important medieval ecclesiastical center from which Pope Urban II preached the First Crusade in 1095. It was the capital of the French duchy of Auvergne from 1556. The city in its present configuration and name was created in 1731 by the union of Clermont and Montferrand. IT sits on the Tretaine River, surrounded on three sides by mountains. In modern France it is the capital of the department of Puy-de-Dôme. It is a university town, and also a tourist and commercial center.
