Note: Carrión de los Condes was one of the pilgrimage sites on route to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, home of the shrine dedicated to Saint James, the patron saint of Saint. The symbol of Saint James, the scalloped shell, became the primary symbol representing pilgrims. Various pilgrimage routes in the autonomous communities of Aragon, Navarre, and Castilla y León correspond to the old Roman roads built in the northern portion of the Iberian Peninsula. This location was once the most important town encountered by pilgrims crossing the region. Its was once the residence of the counts of Carrión, but their palace no longer exists. Important sites include the Church of San Zoíl, the Church of Santa María, and the Church of Santiago. |
