Note: Large ruined city of the Pre-Columbian Maya civilization located around two lagoons, with a series of elevated stone and plaster roads radiating from the central site to various smaller sites, some traveling east to the Caribbean coast and west to the site of Yaxuna. Site of several large temple pyramids. Peak population was 50,000 or higher, covering 80 km. The bulk of Coba's major construction dates to the middle and late Classic period, about 500 to 900 CE. Remained an important Post-Classic site until at least the 14th century, possibly as late as the arrival of the Spanish. Site contains hieroglyphic inscriptions. |
