Note: The area of Rheinpfalz is now part of the German state of Rheinland-Pfalz. For a long time it was administratively a part of Bavaria, although it does not border Bavaria proper. Today it occupies rather more than a quarter of Rheinland-Pfalz. The area includes lands on both sides of the middle Rhine river between its Main and Neckar tributaries. The Rheinpfalz flourished in the 15th and 16th centuries, and its capital, Heidelberg, was a center of the German Renaissance and Reformation. The term "Pfalz" is also used to describe an entity that also includes Upper Palatinate. |
