Note: Mashhad is a major Shi'ite city in the province of Khorāsān. The city is known for housing the shrine of Imām ʻAlī ar-Riḍā (poisoned in 818 CE) and the burial site of caliph Hārūn ar-Rashīd (died in 809 CE). It was an important site along the Silk Road. In 1220, the Mongols attacked the city, but after the fall of the ancient cities of Ṭūs and it regained importance. |
