Note: Kermānshāh is located on the slopes of Koh-e Sefid in the valley of the Qareh Su River, and is inhabited by Kurds, Lors, Arabs, and Turks. The dominant language spoken in the region is Farsi, with Kurdi and other languages spoken as well. Kermānshāh was founded by Bahram IV (388-399 CE) of the Sassanian dynasty, during the 4th century CE. The city is situated on the ancient Silk Road, between the Mediterranean and Central Asia. It was conquered by the Arabs in 640 CE and was ruled by the Seljuq kings in the 11th century. The Safavids (reigned 1501-1736) fortified the town, and the Qajars pushed back the Turks during Fath 'Ali Shah's rule (1797-1834). It is now a large industrial center. |
