Note: Chongqing was declared an open port in 1890, and was the scene of a rebellion from 1896-1898. The city was the headquarters of the Chinese Nationalist Armies and the political capital of China from 1938. It was bombed severely by the Japanese after 1938, and it became the location of an American air base from 1944-1945. |
