Note: One of the oldest continuously inhabited places in the world. The ancient city was pillaged by Indo-Greeks in 185 BCE, and was ruled afterward by the Śuṅga dynasty until ca. 73 BCE. Located on the Silk Road trade routes. In the 4th century CE it became the Gupta capital. The city declined and was abandoned by the 7th century. Later, a town was founded on the site and flourished as part of the Mughal Empire. Was under influence of Great Britain after 1765. |
