Note: Ruined settlement near the modern city of the same name. It was conquered by the Philistines during the 12th century BCE, and became one of five chief cities of Philistia. In the 8th century BCE, it was captured by King Uzziah and taken by the Assyrians. In was later besieged by Egypt for 29 years during the 7th century BCE. It was later annexed to Syria by Pompey. |
