Note: This is a federally-recognized reservation stewarded by the Hopland Band of Pomo Indians. The reservation spans over 62 acres within Mendocino and Lake Counties, California, about 90 miles north of San Fransisco, California. While a small portion of the reservation's land base is held in federal trust for the Hopland Band, the majority of the reservation land is owned privately by both Native and non-Native land owners who have the autonomy to decide whether their land will be entered into federal trust status in the future. The Sho-Ka-Wah peoples comprising the Hopland Band of Pomo Indians have resided in what is now southeastern Mendocino County, California since before European contact, but their original reservation, the Old Hopland Rancheria, was not formally established via Executive Order until June 18, 1907. The original Rancheria was terminated in 1958 pursuant to the California Rancheria Act, and the current reservation boundaries, located 5 miles east of the town of Hopland, were reinstated in the 1980s. |
