Note: Cashel is a town and urban district in County Tipperary, Ireland. It was the stronghold of the kings of Munster from 4th century CE. St. Patrick visited in 450 and established a bishopric there. It was strategic in repulsing Scandinavian invaders. Kings of Munster and at least one king of Ireland, Brian Boru were crowned here. It is the place where the king of Munster submitted to Henry II of England in 1171. It is noted for the Rock of Cashel, a limestone hill bearing the ruins of the town's defenses, St. Patrick's Cathedral, adjoined by a round tower with a Celtic cross on top and Cormac's Chapel built between 1127 and 1134, and the bishop's castle. Cashel today also has a Georgian cathedral, the seat of its protestant bishopric. Its town center is a designated Irish Heritage Site and tourism is a major economic activity. |
