Note: The town is located on the Arda River in south-central Bulgaria. It has culturally and ethnically a Far Eastern character. It became part of Bulgaria after the Balkan Wars in 1912. Today it is an industrial center with lead and zinc refineries. The 1989 estimated population was 69,000.
