Note: Forests located near the equator, within the area bounded by latitudes 23.5 degrees N and 23.5 degrees S. Tropical forests include the rainforest, the cloud forest, and the dry forest, such as the pine savanna and others. One of the major characteristics of tropical forests is their distinct seasonality: winter is absent, and only two seasons are present, rainy and dry. The length of daylight is 12 hours and varies little. Of all earth’s environments, they harbor the greatest diversity of species.

Dutch ..... Bossen die zich dicht bij de evenaar bevinden, tussen breedtegraden 23,5 graden noorderbreedte en 23,5 graden zuiderbreedte. Onder de tropische bossen vallen het regenwoud, het nevelwoud en de droge bossen, zoals de dennensavanne. Een van de voornaamste kenmerken van tropische bossen is hun bijzondere seizoenssysteem: de winter ontbreekt, en er zijn slechts twee seizoenen, het natte en het droge. Het daglicht duurt hier twaalf uur, en die tijd loopt door het jaar heen amper uiteen. Van alle landschapsvormen op aarde herbergen de tropische bossen de grootste diversiteit aan levende soorten.
