Note: Soluble salts are dissolved minerals whose crystallization on the surface and in the substrate of materials causes efflorescence and deterioration.The presence of water-soluble salts is a key factor in the degradation of masonry and other highly porous stone building materials. Surface efflorescence is a serious threat to ancient mural paintings. Conservation seeks to identify soluble salts in objects affected, and extract them or otherwise halt the degradation they inflict.

Dutch ..... Oplosbare zouten zijn opgeloste mineralen waarvan de kristallisatie aan de oppervlakte en in het substraat van materialen tot uitslag en achteruitgang leidt. De aanwezigheid van wateroplosbare zouten is een belangrijke factor bij de achteruitgang van metselwerk en andere zeer poreuze stenen bouwmaterialen. Uitslag van het oppervlak vormt een ernstige bedreiging voor oude muurschilderingen. Bij conservering wordt getracht oplosbare zouten te vinden in door uitslag aangetaste objecten en de zouten te extraheren, of anderszins de achteruitgang tot staan te brengen die erdoor wordt veroorzaakt.
