Note: Refers a style used in fine pottery of Italy, Gaul, and Germany, and throughout the Roman Empire from the first century BCE to the third century CE. It developed from the traditions of ancient Greek pottery in the use of calcitic clays rich in iron compounds to produce a glossy surface, but it differs from Greek pottery in employing a single-phase firing in an open kiln. It is characterized by its red color, smooth finish, and sometimes by decorations of stamped figures or patterns. The term was coined in the ninteenth century, and historically there has been disagreement regarding to which pottery it applies, stemming from various interpretations of the term as either "stamped earth," with reference to the stamped designs, or "sealed earth" with reference to an astringent, fatty, medicinal bole called "terra sigillata," from the island of Lemnos, that was thought to be the clay from which the pottery was made. Further confusion has surrounded the relationship of this term and "Samian ware" or "Samian."

| Dutch ..... Verwijst naar een stijl van verfijnd aardewerk die voorkwam in Italië, Frankrijk, Duitsland, en het gehele Romeinse Rijk van de 1ste eeuw v. Chr. tot de 3de eeuw na Chr. De stijl is schatplichtig aan Oud-Griekse traditiesin het gebruik van calcietrijke klei met een hoog ijzergehalte, om een glimmend oppervlak te creëren, maar verschilt van Grieks aardewerk doordat het maar een keer is gebakken, in een open oven. Kenmerkend zijn de rode kleur, de zorgvuldige afwerking, en soms de decoraties van gestempelde figuren en patronen. De term werd bedacht in de 19de eeuw, en sindsdien bestaat er onenigheid over de vraag op welk soort aardewerk deze van toepassing is, omdat de term verschillend vertaald wordt, ofwel als ‘gestempelde aarde’,hetgeen verwijst naar de gestempelde motieven, of als ‘verzegelde aarde’, hetgeen verwijst naar een harde, vettige medicinale grondsoort genoemd‘terra sigillata’ die voorkomt op het eiland Lemnos, en waarvan werd verondersteld dat het de klei was waarmee het aardewerk werd vervaardigd. Voor meer verwarring zorgde de relatie tussen deze term en ‘Samisch aardewerk’ of ‘Samisch’. |
| Spanish ..... Se refiere a un estilo de cerámica fina utilizado en Italia, Galia y Alemania y a lo largo y ancho del Imperio Romano desde el siglo I a.C al siglo III d.C. Evolucionó de las tradiciones de cerámica griega antigua en el uso de arcillas calcáreas ricas en compuestos de hierro para producir una superficie esmaltada, pero difiere de la alfarería griega en que emplea una sola fase de cocción en un horno abierto.
