Note: Refers to the first day of Lent, occuring 6 1/2 weeks before Easter. The name comes from the practice of marking the foreheads of clergy and worshippers with ash. Typically the ash comes from burning the palms used on the previous Palm Sunday. It is the only other day besides Good Friday for which fasting is prescribed by the Roman Catholic Church. Ash Wednesday is also observed in the Anglican, Lutheran, and some other Protestant churches. Eastern Orthodox churches do not observe Ash Wednesday because Lent begins on a Monday in their calendar.

| Chinese (traditional) ..... 指大齋期首日，亦即復活節前六週半。此名來自在教士或信徒前額以灰燼畫作記號的儀式而來。畫記的灰一般來自燃燒聖枝主日用過的棕枝。聖灰星期三是受難日之外，唯一被羅馬天主教會齋戒的日子。英國國教、路德教派及一些新教派亦慶祝此節日。東正教不慶祝聖灰星期三，因為根據其教曆，大齋日開始於星期一。 |
| Dutch ..... Verwijst naar de eerste dag van de vastenperiode, zes en een halve week voor Pasen. De naam komt voort uit het gebruik om de voorhoofden van kerkgangers en geestelijken te merken met as. Meestal betreft het de as van de verbrande palmtakken die zijn gebruikt op Palmzondag van het jaar ervoor. Het is behalve Goede Vrijdag de enige dag waarvoor de rooms-katholieke kerk vasten voorschrijft. Aswoensdag wordt ook gevierd door de anglicaanse, lutheraanse en protestantse kerk. Oosters-orthodoxe kerken vieren Aswoensdag niet, omdat de vastenperiode volgens hun kalender op een maandag begint. |
