Note: Liturgical containers, often in the shape of coffins, that hold sacred earth or ashes from Ash Wednesday that are meant to be buried in the coffin of a deceased person, so that the dead is considered buried in consecrated ground. This practice dates from a period in which Catholics were forbidden to perform religious rites in Dutch cemeteries. In Old Catholic parishes this practice is still in use. |

Dutch ..... Kistje dat gewijde aarde of as van aswoensdag bevat ter uitstrooiing in de doodskist. Door dit ritueel was de overledene in gewijde aarde begraven. Stamt uit de tijd dat katholieken op begraafplaatsen geen kerkelijke ritus mochten uitvoeren. In oud-katholieke parochies is het nog gebruik dat op een kist in het crematorium gewijde as uit een beaardingskistje over de kist wordt gestrooid. |
