Note: Trial impressions of a printed image; print impressions from a plate or block, usually before the production of the regular edition, in order to correct, add to, or check the development of a work. Formerly, true proofs referred to proofs made before work on the plate or block is finished. Common since the 18th century are proofs before letters, artist's proofs, remarque proofs, and printers' proofs; such proofs may be deliberately printed to be sold at higher prices, thus are not, in the strictest sense, true proofs. The term is sometimes loosely and incorrectly and used as a synonym for "impressions."

| Dutch ..... Verwijst in algemene zin naar afdrukken van een plaat of blok die meestal voorafgaand aan de reguliere uitgave zijn gemaakt, teneinde de voortgang van een werk te corrigeren of te controleren, of er iets aan toe te voegen. Vroeger verwees de term ‘drukproeven’ feitelijk naar proefdrukken die werden gemaakt voordat het werk aan de plaat of het blok was voltooid. Sinds de 18de eeuw zijn algemeen gebruikte begrippen: afdrukken avant la lettre, afdrukken voor de kunstenaar, afdrukken met remarque en drukkerstesten; dit zijn typen proefdrukken die bewust zijn gemaakt om tegen hogere prijzen te worden verkocht; het zijn dan ook geen drukproeven in de zuivere betekenis van het woord. De term wordt soms incorrect gebruikt als synoniem voor 'afdrukken'. |

Probeabdruck eines gedruckten Bildes; gedruckter Abzug von einer Platte oder einem Block, gewöhnlich vor der Produktion der regulären Auflage, um die Entwicklung eines Werks zu korrigieren oder um etwas hinzuzufügen oder zu überprüfen. Früher bezog sich der Begriff "Echter Probedruck" auf einen Probedruck, der hergestellt wurde, bevor die Arbeit an der Platte oder dem Block beendet war. Seit dem 18. Jahrhundert sind Probedrucke vor dem Schriftsatz, dem Künstlerprobedruck, dem Remarqueprobedruck und dem Druckerprobedruck üblich; dies sind Typen von Probedrucken, die mit der Absicht gedruckt wurden, zu höheren Preisen verkauft zu werden, und keine echten Probedrucke im eigentlichen Sinn. Der Begriff wird manchmal einfach und unrichtig als Synonym für "Abzug" verwendet. |
| Spanish ..... Copias gráficas, textuales o fotográficas de una obra hecha para corregir, agregar a, o chequear el desarrollo de una obra. Se refiere, en un sentido general, a estampas de una impresión tomadas de una plancha o bloque, generalmente antes de la producción de la edición normal, para corregir, agregar o chequear el desarrollo de una obra. Las pruebas de la obra verdadera se realizan antes que la plancha o bloque se termine. Desde el siglo XVIII son comunes las pruebas anterior a las letras, prueba del artista, prueba de remarque y prueba del impresor; estos son tipos de prueba que son impresas deliberadamente para ser vendidas a precios muy altos y no son, en sentido estricto, pruebas verdaderas. El término es empleado a veces de manera imprecisa e incorrecta y es usado como sinónimo de "impresión." |
