Note: Describes the style and culture of the inhabitants of the Gambier Islands. Few works of art created by the Gambier Islanders survive today due to their destruction by orders of missionaries in the 19th century. The few surviving sculptures and fragments demonstrate the sophistication of their craft, which is figuratively closer to European technique than the art of other Polynesian islands of the 19th century.

| Dutch ..... Beschrijft werken die zijn vervaardigd door de bewoners van de Gambier eilanden. Er is slechts een handjevol Gambier-kunstwerken bewaard gebleven, aangezien de meeste in de loop van de 19de eeuw op last van missionarissen zijn vernietigd. De weinige nog resterende beeldhouwwerken en fragmenten laten zien dat hun kunstambacht een hoge graad van ontwikkeling kende; in figuratief opzicht staat deze kunst dichter bij de Europese technieken dan bij de kunst van de andere Polynesische eilanden in de 19de eeuw. |
