Note: Rectangular containers placed in public places and intended to contain a telephone. They were first introduced by police departments in urban areas in the late 1870s in the United States and Western Europe to allow patrol officers and citizens to alert the central command of disturbances. The term may be used to refer to roadside boxes installed on poles or walls and containing telephones to allow motorists with disabled vehicles to request assistance. In Britain, usage overlaps with "telephone booths." |

Sie wurden von der Polizei gegen Ende der 1870er Jahre in städtischen Gebieten in den Vereinigten Staaten und Westeuropa eingeführt, um es Streifenpolizisten und Bürgern zu ermöglichen, bei Störungen die Leitstelle zu alarmieren. Die Bezeichnung wird auch für mit einem Telefon ausgestattete Gehäuse am Straßenrand verwendet, die an Pfählen oder Wänden montiert sind und Autofahrern mit einem Fahrzeugschaden ermöglichen, um Unterstützung zu bitten. In Großbritannien überschneidet sich die Verwendung mit "Telefonzelle". |
