Note: Light swords with a long, narrow, double-edged blade and a hilt furnished with extensive protection for the hand, such as arms of the hilt and side rings, a shell guard, or a cup guard. Originally designed for both cutting and thrusting, they developed into purely thrusting swords and became the principal fencing weapons of the 16th and 17th centuries.

Additional Notes:
Dutch ..... Degens met een meer dan 1 m. lange kling en een ingewikeld beugelgevest. In gebruik eind 15e tot eind 17e eeuw (niet voor ruiters). Het rapier is meer een kostuumaccessoire dan een oorlogswapen. 
Spanish ..... Espadas livianas con una hoja larga, angosta, de doble filo, y una empuñadura provista de una amplia protección para la mano, tal como brazos en la empuñadura y argollas laterales, una guarnición de concha o de taza. Originariamente diseñadas para asentar tanto cortes como estocadas, devinieron en espadas sólo para estocadas y se constituyeron en las principales armas de esgrima en los siglos XVI y XVII.
