Note: Species of maple closely related to sugar maple (A. saccharum), and in some classifications treated as a subspecies; the situation is complicated by the fact that the two species tend to form hybrids. The two species may be distinguished by number of leaf lobes: the black maple has three-lobed leaves and the sugar maple has five-lobed leaves.

Additional Notes:
Dutch ..... Esdoorn die nauw verwant is aan de suikeresdoorn (A. saccharum) en in sommige classificaties wordt beschouwd als een ondersoort daarvan. De situatie wordt gecompliceerd doordat de twee soorten soms kruisingen vormen. De twee soorten kan men onderscheiden aan het aantal lobben van de bladeren: de bladeren van Acer nigrum hebben drie lobben en die van de suikeresdoorn vijf.
