belt looms (handlooms, looms (textile tools), ... Furnishings and Equipment (hierarchy name)) |
|
Note: Primitive devices used to weave narrow, ribbon-like articles such as sashes, belts, garters, and hair bands no wider than 18 inches. Designed to be operated from a seated position on the floor, these devices typically consist of two parallel sticks or rods that support the warp, one being attached to a tree or post and the other to the weaver's belt. The warp is wound in a spiral between the rods and is held taut as the weaver leans against the belt. This is the primary type of weaving device used by the Indigenous peoples of the Americas prior to the mid-17th century, and is still utilized today by the Navajo and Pueblo peoples, amongst others. |
