Note: Generally, the Christian sacrament in which the bread and wine are consecrated. The belief surrounding the nature of the sacrament differs in various denominations: for example, the Baptist view is memorialism, the Reformed view is spiritual presence, the Lutheran view is consubstantiation, and the Roman Catholic view is transubstantiation. Specifically, the term is often used to distinguish Protestant liturgies from the Catholic mass.

Het geloof over de aard van het sacrament verschilt tussen verschillende denominaties: bijvoorbeeld, de doopsgezinde opvatting is dat op dat moment herdacht wordt, de gereformeerde opvatting is dat er spirituele aanwezigheid is, de Lutherse opvatting is consubstantiatie, en de rooms-katholieke dat er transsubstantiatie plaatsvindt. Met name wordt de term vaak gebruikt om de protestantse liturgie te onderscheiden van de katholieke mis. |
