Spanish (language) (Castilian (group of languages), Western Iberian (languages), ... Associated Concepts (hierarchy name))

Note: Refers broadly to the Romance language that developed from Vulgar Latin with contributions from the pre-Roman languages that were spoken in the territory of the Astures, an ancient tribe of the Iberian peninsula. It is now spoken in Spain and as a first language by around 360 million people worldwide. Given that the Castilian dialect is the source from which modern standard Spanish developed, this language overall may be called "Castilian"; however, for the dialect spoken in Castile and elsewhere in northern and central Spain, use "Castilian Spanish."
