Note: Species of aquatic perennial plant native to tropical Asia and Australia, having showy white or pink flowers. Under favorable circumstances its seeds may remain viable for many years, with the oldest recorded lotus germination occurring with seeds that were 1,300 years old, recovered from a dry lakebed in China. It is a sacred bloom in Hindu and Buddhist iconography.

| Dutch ..... Overblijvende waterplant die inheems is in de tropische gebieden in Azië en Australië en die opvallende witte of roze bloemen heeft. Onder gunstige omstandigheden blijven de zaden vele jaren levensvatbaar. In China zijn in de bedding van een drooggevallen meer zaden gevonden van 1300 jaar oud die men nog kon laten ontkiemen, een record voor lotussen. Het is een heilige bloem in de hindoeïstische en boeddhistische iconografie. |
