Note: Genus of plants that includes the citron, lemon, lime, orange, grapefruit, tangerine, shaddock, and their many varieties, most yielding pulpy fruits covered with fairly thick skins. The genus is believed to have originated in southeast Asia; citrus has been cultivated in an increasingly large area since ancient times. The precise number of natural species is unclear and their taxonomy is complex because many of the named species are clonally propagated hybrids. There is genetic evidence that even some wild breeding species are of hybrid origin: cultivated citrus may be derived from as few as four ancestral species.

Additional Notes:
Dutch ..... Genus van planten, waaronder de sukadeboom, citroenboom, limoenboom, sinaasappelboom, grapefruit, mandarijnboom, pompelmoes en vele andere soorten. De meeste produceren vlezige vruchten met een tamelijk dikke schil. Men denkt dat het genus oorspronkelijk uit Zuidoost-AziĆ« komt. Sinds de oudheid is men deze bomen in een steeds groter gebied gaan kweken. Het precieze aantal natuurlijke soorten is onduidelijk en hun classificatie is complex omdat veel soorten kruisingen zijn die door middel van klonering zijn gekweekt. Er is genetisch bewijs dat zelfs een aantal soorten die in het wild voorkomen oorspronkelijk kruisingen waren. Gekweekte citrusbomen stammen misschien af van niet meer dan vier oersoorten.
