peridot (mineral) (olivine, mineral, ... Materials (hierarchy name)) |
|
Note: The transparent, gem-quality variety of olivine, which is a magnesium iron silicate mineral characterized by an olive green color. Peridot was known in ancient Greece and in Egypt; many of the green stones known to be worn by Cleopatra were peridot. Peridot was called "evening emerald" because it appears to lose its yellowish cast at night. It has sometimes been misidentified as emerald and as green glass. The main old world source for peridot was the island of Zabargad on St. John's Island in the Red Sea. It is also found in Brazil, South Africa, Myanmar, Norway, British Columbia, and Arizona and Hawaii in the USA. |
