Note: Hand-inked photographs produced by a bichromate process developed by G.E.H. Rawlins ca. 1904. A sheet of paper is coated with a thin layer of gelatin and sensitized with bichromate, dried in the dark and exposed under a negative. Exposure hardens the gelatin in the shadow areas and partially in mid-tones. Soaking in water subsequently removes sensitizer and causes the mid-tone and highlight areas to absorb moisture. Oil based inks are repelled in these areas, and remain to a greater or lesser degree in others. The plate is then allowed to dry or is transfer-printed to another sheet, then re-inked for more prints.

| Dutch ..... Papier met een gelatinelaagje wordt lichtgevoelig gemaakt met kaliumdichromaat. Na droging wordt het papier in contact met een negatief belicht. Wanneer men het papier daarna in koud water legt, zwellen de onbelichte delen op; de belichte (gelooide) gedeelten nemen minder of helemaal geen water op. Het vochtige gelatinereliëf neemt daardoor meer vette inkt aan in de gelooide gedeelten, waar het water de inkt afstoot. De olieverf wordt meestal tamponerend met een kwast aangebracht. Bij de oliedruk laat men de inkt indrogen op het gelatinereliëf. |
| German ..... Handgefärbte Fotografie, die in einem Bichromat-Verfahren, das von G.E.H. Rawling um 1904 entwickelt wurde, hergestellt wird. Ein Blatt Papier wird mit einer dünnen Gelatineschicht beschichtet, mit Bichromat lichtempfindlich gemacht, im Dunkeln getrocknet und unter einem Negativ belichtet. Die Belichtung verhärtet die Gelatine in den Schattenbereichen und teilweise in den Zwischentönen. Das folgende Einweichen in Wasser entfernt die lichtempfindliche Schicht und lässt die Zwischentöne und Hellbereiche Feuchtigkeit absorbieren. Farben auf Ölbasis werden von diesen Bereichen zurückgewiesen und verbleiben in stärkerer oder schwächerer Form an anderen hängen. Die Platte kann dann getrocknet werden oder wird auf ein anderes Blatt gedruckt und dann neu eingefärbt für weitere Drucke. |
