Note: In general, paintings and calligraphy by Zen Buddhist priests of China, Korea, and Japan. More specifically, may refer to work by Japanese Zen priests from the Edo period (1600-1868). The content of the work is focused on teachings of the Dharma. Aesthetically this style is known to be bold, spontaneous and even amateurish in execution and light-hearted in tone. The term literally means "Zen painting." For the practice of painting as a Zen activity, use "gazen."

Additional Notes:
Chinese (traditional) ..... 泛指由中國、韓國和日本的禪宗高僧所作的書畫,或特指日本江戶時代(西元1600至1868年)禪師的字畫,內容以弘揚達摩禪法為主,美術風格則咸認以大膽隨興、筆調輕盈、筆觸線條草率為特色;字面意思為「禪宗繪畫」,若是將繪畫當做禪修活動進行,則以「畫禪」稱之。

Men gebruikt de term meer specifiek voor het werk van Japanse zenpriesters uit de Edo-periode (1600-1868). De inhoud van de schilderijen en kalligrafieën is gericht op de gedragsregels van de dharma. De stijl is krachtig, vrolijk en spontaan ��� soms zijn de werken zelfs slordig uitgevoerd. De term betekent letterlijk ���zenschilderij'. Gebruik ���gazen' voor schilderen als zenactiviteit. 
German ..... Allgemein Gemälde und Kalligraphie von Priestern des Zen-Buddhismus aus China, Korea und Japan. Spezieller kann sich der Begriff auf ein Werk von japanischen Zen-Priestern aus der Edo-Periode (1600-1868) beziehen. Der Inhalt der Werke ist auf Lehren des Dharma konzentriert. Ästhetisch ist dieser Stil bekannt dafür, kräftig, impulsiv und sogar amateurhaft in der Ausführung und heiter im Ton zu sein. Der Begriff bedeutet wörtlich "Zenmalerei". Für die Ausübung der Malerei als eine Zen-Tätigkeit, ist "Gazen" zu verwenden.
